Roleplaying Guide
Welcome to Rouge Writers! My name is Deanna and, aside from being one of the founders and administrators of Rouge Writers, I will also be your guide to Roleplaying (here on out, we’re calling it “RP”). So, strap yourselves in, folks!
Roleplay Premise
The premise of Rouge Writer’s main RP is that it takes place in present-day Paris, France and focuses (predominantly) on the interactions between workers and patrons of the Moulin Rouge. However, over time, the site has come to embrace any and all other types of residents in Paris. We've got showgirls. We've got gangsters. We've got artists and professors and doctors and tourists. And, funnily enough, they come from all corners of the globe to experience the City of Lights. To find out more about character creation, check out the Character Guidelines
How do I RP?
Be realistic, be reasonable, and that’s the only real guideline you need. If you-- or another real human being -- cannot do what your character does, don't have him or her do it. For example: I don't have the scientific know-how to be a doctor, but I could write a doctor character because real people can become doctors. I cannot be a sorcerer because a real person cannot become a sorcerer. This is a realistic fiction RP.
---
On RW, we use the following format:
Character Name*
Writing action and description should be in normal font.
Thoughts should be italicized. So should flashbacks..
“Your dialogue should be in quotes.”
“Other people’s dialogue as pertaining to your scene should be bolded. This is a courtesy to acknowledge your RP partner's work. If you don't include their text in your post, don't worry about it.”
It’s straightforward. If the format is unclear to you, look around the site and see how others are doing things. If you're still confused, don't hesitate to ask.
* You can also do a Character Name at the top, if that’s more your style. You don't have to bold it, either, if that's not your thing. We just ask that you put your character’s name at the top so people can tell who scenes are between.
---
"What about content?" you may ask. The rules say “PG-13 or lower.” That means that if it can’t be shown in a PG-13 movie, don’t discuss it. Though topics such as spirituality, swearing, nudity, violence, disease, and sex are allowed in scenes, please use discretion. Ask yourself before you post, "Does this further my plot?" and "is this written in such a manner that they could be shown in a PG-13 film?" These topics are part of life and often part of fiction as well, but we ask that you be respectful of the sensitive topics that you deal with!
Remember: The views held by characters do not necessarily reflect those of the writers.
That’s really about it. As our mission statement says, we don’t believe in limiting creativity. We trust you will make smart, artistic decisions. Those in violation with our rules or those outlined by Proboards will be reprimanded. Happy plotting!
