OOC: Trying reallly hard not to have Lucian be a b*tch. BIC:
Lucian Michaud
“Is your attorney my attorney, too? Is he good? I mean, really, reallygood?”
“And therefore, your honor, it is obvious that Lucian Michaud was just an innocent victim of his mentor’s greed. Was he blinded by ambition? Of course. But what mistake did he make? Trusting an old friend? Trying to provide for his wife and child? If those are crimes, your honor, you might as well lock up every good, honest man in England!”
Lucian smiled grimly and nodded. David Johnson was nothing, if not a talented lawyer. An excellent orator and an even better analyst, Johnson had gotten Lucian through the embezzlement scandal in one piece. His family hadn’t survived in one piece, but retrospectively, that made sense. Natalie was too image-conscious, too acquisitive to settle down with Lucian in quiet, if disreputable retirement. She never loved him enough.
Lucian knew he loved Ashton enough to stay by her through trials. Especially ones in which she was even more blameless than he had ever been.
But she’d have none of Lucian’s answer now.
“Because I worked so hard for this job and…” Ashton sniffled hard. "…And… and they just took it away. I hope they rot. You know the club’s business rates went up after I started working there? They never thought about that when they made my substitute my replacement!”
Just like that, she was collapsing in Lucian’s arms, moaning and crying. As long as Ashton’s face was buried in Lucian’s chest, he could afford a stolen eye roll.
Until now, he’d never once rolled his eyes at Ashton. He’d always thought of it as disrespectful, rude, childish. But here she was, twenty four years old and yelling and crying over a lost job. A job she could easily be compensated for, if not restored to. He would expect this behavior out of Damien, but not—
Lucian shut his eyes tightly.
Sometimes, when he wasn’t actively thinking about it, Lucian could convince himself that Ashton was wise beyond her years. Fool himself into thinking that. Reality was, she was twenty four years old. She was the same age as Damien and so it shouldn’t have surprised Lucian that Ashton was throwing a fit.
And yet, it irritated him still.
He refused to be the only adult in this relationship. If Ashton was so hellbent on getting bent out of shape every time something went awry, theirs would be a tumultuous marriage. One he wouldn’t wish upon either of them. One he wouldn’t wish his children to witness.
His children…
Gregory’s temper tantrums had been hellish today. Without Mummy, Gregory screamed his bloody lungs out. And then he noticed Lucian, as if for the first time, and promptly stopped. As if all was right with the world. From an infant, tantrums were expected. But Lucian only had enough resolve to quell and infant’s tantrums. Ashton would have to be an adult, too. And quickly, if they planned on raising a family together.
“Can we really get my job back?”
Lucian extricated himself from the hug.
“Most likely,” he said. “But not tonight. Tonight, the best thing you can do is dry your eyes, rehydrate and get some sleep.”
