The Phone Call:
R: [snatches phone / dials Santiago / begins examing IV on arms ]
S: *looks at phone* *answers* Hello
R: [low murmur / breathless and rushed] Santiago, I need- I have to get out of- I need your help, okay? Please?
S: Rachel, where are you? What's wrong?
R: I'm at the hospital- I have to get out of here because- [rips IV / huge scream but the nurses can't hear so digs head into a pillow and bites hard]
R: [after a moment / wincing and moaning/ and throwing herself out of the bed ] Wow, that really hurt...
S: Hospital? What happened?
R: Okay, so in a nutshell, (dressing in a rush) a sniper from my dad's gang shot at me, I shouldn't be alive right now, I need to get the hell out of New York without anyone knowing becaues someone is watching me, and I have to escape this hospital. Excuse my bluntness.
S: Jesus. Where are you going from the hospital?
R: Paris.
S: Stupid question. To the airport, then?
S: You need tickets?
R: I have been fake sleeping all day to get alone time to purchase a ticket on my phone. *peeking out the door* sh*t. Santiago, how do I get past all these nurses?
S: How many are there?
R: There are three outside my door. More down the halls but I can only hear them.
S: You need a diversion. What's the number for the front desk?
R: (212) 312-5000
S: *pulls up internet on phone* Okay. And what room are you in?
R: Room 203. *under breath* Ok.. I got this.. I got this..
S: Yeah, you do. There's a staff staircase... two rooms down from you. There's a window in there with a fire escape leading onto... I can't tell what street. Can you see the patient name on the room across from you?
R: One second.. *peeks out again* It's, Ellen Jenders.
S: Good. Okay. I'm calling the desk and telling them she's suicidal. The nurses on the floor will go to her room, while they're there, make a run for the exit.
S: Call me from the street.
R: *leaning against the wall / getting dizzy* Wow. Yes. Alright. Thank you.
S: You got it. Wait until you're sure the nurses are in Jenders' room.
R: Sure thing. Call you in a couple minutes.
*front desk phone rings*
*Nurse answers, talks for a few minutes. Presses intercom, other nurses' beepers go off and they begin to go to the room across the hall*
* Rachel sees all this happening / tucks her phone into her purse / clenches her patient gown and sprints to the stairwell*
* gets to fire escape / climbs down onto the street / hides in the corner of the alley until she gets her phone out/ calls Santiago*
S: That was fast. Okay. Don't go east, if you wanna avoid the police station.
R: Alright. Not going east. *heads out* Do you think riding a cab would be safe to go to the airport, or is that just throwing myself into a whirlwind of trouble?
S: Are you in a hospital gown?
R: Unfortunately. So I stick out like a sore thumb.
S: Get clothes. Anything nearby?
R: *reading outloud* Duane Reade... alright. Call you after I get the clothes?
S: Good. When's your flight get in?
R: Two in the morning. I'm so sorry...
S: Hey. Don't apologize.
R: Right. Okay. Yes. I can rent a car-- *walking into store / ducking* get a hotel room until I get my own place. Do you mind if I stop by your place? I really... need you in on this. If that's okay?
S: Yeah, of course.
R: Not to drag you into it. I don't want to do that. *clerk recognizes Rachel and begins calling her out*
S: What's going on?
R: She recognizes me...
S: sh*t. What's she want, an autograph?
R: I think I know what will shut her up. *goes up to the front / dives into purse and brings out 100/ voice gets threatening and dark) You never saw me. I wasn't here. *friendly voice* Where's your dressing room? *clerk points* Okay, I'm changing as we speak...
S: Good. When you're out of there, walk uptown, you'll be by the river. There's bound to be cabs. And people. You want to be around people as much as possible.
R: Right. To blend in. Is it okay if I rent a car in your name? I can just use it to drive from the airport and cancel it right away. Promise.
S: Yeah. Smart thinking/
R: Okay. I'm heading out. Santiago, thank you. I don't know how to repa-... I.. Just. Thank you.
S: This is what we do, chica. Don't worry about it.
R: (sarcasm / smiling for the first time) and what a comeback we are making... Ok. Will you be awake when I get in?
S: I don't sleep. ... Yeah. I'll meet you at the airport.
S: De Gaulle?
R: Yes. *suddenly in a sea of people* I'll see you then
S: Stay safe.
R: Always do. Bye!
