Character: Emilio Esteban Duval
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Occupation: Police Officer
AI: Wilmer Valderrama
Personality: Emilio is a wisecracking underdog. He always has something smart (or smart *ss) to say, but very rarely does anyone bother to listen. He’s the middle child of three, so he’s pretty used to it, actually. He takes a lot of flack in stride. And mostly, he doesn’t mind blending in, being the perfect “grey man” in investigations, but just once, Emilio wants to be important.
History:
Adopted from Colombia at age five by Georgia and Franck Duval, Emilio is the (technical) oldest. His brother, Andreas is not only his twin brother, but was also adopted by Georgia and Franck. Theirs was a happy childhood in France, but Emilio sometimes swears he remembers his biological parents. Andreas frequently told him he was full of crap and that if he couldn’t remember them, Emilio couldn’t either. Andreas was the impressive child—smart and athletically built, he quickly grew taller than Emilio and it was always a toss-up as to what Andreas would do with his life. Emilio, meanwhile, was something of a jokester in school. Although intelligent, Emilio didn’t really stand out when compared to his brother. So instead of focusing on school or sports, Emilio became something of a social butterfly. He learned to get along easily with various groups of people and this has served him well as an adult.
When Emilio and Andreas were ten, their parents adopted their third child, six year old Carolien from South Africa to complete their family. It was clear from the start that Carolien might have been a genius and, Emilio—despite his smile and upbeat attitude—couldn’t help but to feel like he wasn’t quite good enough for anybody. He never complained, though. Emilio was never comfortable with being the squeaky wheel. The more time went on, the more Emilio thought he could remember his early childhood in Colombia and the more he began to think that his parents hadn’t abandoned him and Andreas, but had been murdered. It was around this time that Emilio began to develop a fascination with criminal justice.
As adults, Andreas became a professional football (soccer) player and Caroline went to med school, Emilio joined the police force. This did not help Emilio stand out. Instead, he slipped easily into the rank-and-file world of laws and orders, and did his best not to screw up too badly on the beat. All the while, he hoped to be made detective. He never hoped to solve his biological parents’ murder, but he did decide that he wanted to be a homicide detective to ensure that other kids got the answers he grew up without. When he finally achieved that last year, Emilio was thrilled. Assigned to Louis Masson, a detective near retirement, Emilio excelled. He finally started getting respect in the department, solving cases, and making a name for himself. But when Masson was killed during a drug bust and Emilio was assigned to work with Detective Robert Grant, he knew it would be back to being invisible. Grant’s reputation for efficiency, sarcasm, and destroying his partners is a death sentence to any rookie.
Emilio refuses to be scared off by Grant so easily, though. And with the spike of crime in Paris recently, maybe Emilio will finally get his chance to prove himself after all.
