Your Character’s Name: Rowan Arthur Leatherby
Your Character’s Age: 42
Your Character’s Gender: Male
Occupation: bartender
Physical Description: Rowan is a ruggedly handsome man with signs of age gracing his face in the way of wrinkles and ever more noticeable jowls. His hair varies from blonde to brown with the more and more present pieces of gray. He's relatively short, especially in terms of Europeans, at a few inches shy of six feet but maintains a muscular, and what some would call stocky, build.
Personality: Paranoid would be an understatement. Rowan is always looking over his shoulder, always ready to run, to hide, to escape. This makes him relatively cold in his social interactions and tends to make people think that he's just a jerk. In reality, he's a very nice guy with a body full of nurturing and protective bones; his current situation in life prevents him from showing these traits to their fullest...or at all. He could be said to have the disposition of a wild dog, bristly and unforgiving until domesticated. Despite his mostly bad attitude, he's always one for justice and always fighting for the under dog.
History: Born in England, Rowan grew up an only child in a tough situation. His mother, Lily was a prostitute, pregnant by Rowan's father, Benjamin, a customer. Benjamin, out of respect and tradition married Lily and they started a life together but mere pennies to their name. Rowan's father took a job working on a passenger train that took him all over the United Kingdom while Lily stayed home to raise Rowan. The young boy was teased throughout school due to his family's economic status and even more so because of his mother's former occupation. He quickly learned to fight, able to defend himself against the bullies who were always taller and stronger than him. Rowan scraped by throughout all of school, making grades just good enough to pass to avoid getting any more attention. He had always been more street smart than book smart anyway. He decided in his last year of school that it just wasn't worth it anymore and decided that he would join the Royal Marines.
He was just barely old enough to join and would have to start at the very bottom of the ladder but that was just the way Rowan liked it. He was a young man doing everything to fight against all the odds and to prove everyone around him wrong. He was one of the best fighters in his platoon and traveled up the ranks at a startling pace. During this time Rowan met the woman that he would claim to be the love of his life., Lydia Fowler. After a few years of intense training and turbulent romance, Rowan was thrust into some of the military conflicts that would change the world. The Royal Marines, having missed out on the Gulf War sent commandos to Northern Iraq in 1991 as a part of Operation Safe Haven, Rowan was one of them. Upon return from this mission Rowan decided that it was time to make Lydia his wife, they were married 3 months later and in 1993 brought their first child, Eliza, into the world. Shortly after, in 1995, Rowan was deployed to Bosnia as a part of a Rapid Reaction Force. During this conflict he received wounds that required him to be sidelined until he could heal. He was fortunate that there was six conflict free years in front of him.
In 1996 Rowan's son, Rudy, was born and quickly became Rowan's pride and joy. It is never a parent's choice to have a favorite child but Rudy was definitely Rowan's favorite. The two were joint at the hip and Rowan couldn't have been a better father. Eliza and Rowan never seemed to get along. It would be years until Rowan really understood why but, in the meantime, he understand that his daughter had a severe attitude problem and a knack for getting into an enormous amount of trouble. All of which Rowan had to talk her out of.
In January of 2002, Rowan was deployed to Afghanistan. He returned, a weary battle hardened soldier, in 2003. His wife was a stressed out mess, they fought and they argued and slowly things calmed down up until and through Rowan's second deployment in the beginning of 2004. During this tour of duty, Rowan was allowed visits home and took them graciously, spending time with his wife and his children every chance that he got. This seemed to ease the tensions on his marriage and the stress on Lydia. Rowan was fortunate enough to return home and not be deployed again during 2005 and most of 2006 but, therein lied the problem. Rowan was deployed on a final tour, after which he would retire at 40 years old and the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (one of the few to breach the enlisted/officer barrier). This tour was too much for Lydia and upon Rowan's return she requested a divorce. Rowan was exhausted from fighting the battles of his country and after some pleading and careful discussion, Rowan ceded to Lydia's request. He quickly moved out, renting a small house in the countryside where his daughter and son would share half their time with him and half with their mother.
Rudy continued to be the golden child throughout the next few years while Eliza ran into worlds and worlds of trouble. She went through -life boyfriend after low-life boyfriend surrounded herself with the most inappropriate crowd she could have possibly found. It wasn't long before, unknown to Rowan, Eliza, still only 18, found her way into an affair with her father's 40 year old landlord. The landlord was a disgusting big of a man but Eliza didn't care, the man had power over her father and she was happy to break away from Rowan's discipline and bring him hardship that she felt he had brought on her. She influenced the landlord to raise the rent over and over, forcing Rowan into a bad financial situation. It wasn't long before Rowan came to the landlord to discuss what was happening with the rent. The landlord revealed that he felt he could charge whatever it was that he wanted, considering he was in a sexual relationship with Eliza. Rowan lost it, murdering the landlord on the site and forcing himself into the position of a fugitive. Rowan ran to his best friend for help. His best friend told him to go to London and so, Rowan went. Unfortunately, the same best friend sold Rowan out to the police, prompting a chase throughout the streets of London. Rowan determined that he wouldn't be able to survive in hiding in England and decided to run to the closest place to England, France, and to the most populated place he could think of, Paris. It was simple enough to hide in a large tourist city when you knew no one and there was no one to tell the police where you were hiding. He quickly found a job as a bartender, not wanting to draw any attention to himself if he could help it, and made Paris his new home.
